Signal boost

(Found this via Catherine Lundoff ): "just because I didn't kill myself, doesn't mean I didn't feel like I was dying" A courageous and heartbreaking story.

I'm sure you've heard by now about Rutgers freshman Tyler Clementi's suicide after his roommate outed him via a sex tape on the internet. It is a tragic banner under which to rally. Offer an ear, a shoulder, a couch to crash on. Do what you can to spread the word that it gets better, that suicide is never the answer.

Scanner envy

You guys, why didn't anybody tell me Inception was such a good movie? (I know you did; irrelevant) I would have seen it sooner. Joseph Gordon-Levitt got pretty fine after 3rd Rock.

I have some more DC Comics fan art in the works but then I promised myself I'd do some original concept art, which will probably show up here in the coming months. The webcomic project has actually lifted off the ground but I made a calculated error: the dead-tree sketchbook in which I'm drafting it is too big for my scanner screen. Even my regular sketchbook is about a quarter-inch too large so it gets these wrinkly gaps of dark splotches from air pockets. (Technical terms, y'know) I think it's time for a new, useful scanner. I might need to talk to Sanity Clause about that.

I've got some decent short stories-in-progress still in the wings but I've been crazy distracted with trying to get a website launched. Here, I have no skill set. I grew up in a household with computers and I'm in my twenties. And yet when it comes to html code I just go all Hansel on everything.

But a particular knight on a white horse called me and is set to talk about it this weekend, so I might be saved and the gnomes can finally take a day off.

That Hansel is so hot right now.

In which I am at odds with nature

Bleaaughh... allergy season must be starting. I'm stuffy and making noises only a warthog should make. Attractive, right? I may need to ride the white Benedryl pony tonight. And in the ten minutes it took to wrote this post, I'm suddenly clear as a bell. What the fff-- weird, but I'm not complaining.

In other Tales of a City Girl Working in the Boondocks, I killed a spider as big as a rat in my office this morning. I guess you could say it was a welcome distraction from the bee nest near the front door.

Now, have some links!

Thanks to my buddy Jon, I have discovered the awesomeness that is Mouse Guard.

This book has tons of FB fans but only because of the title/meme crossover. No one seems to care about the actual book, which is a little sad. By a weird coincidence, "shut up I'm talking" is a current favorite in the parlance of Casa de Hildebrand.

"Muslims in my Monitor" Saladin Ahmed on the depictions of Muslims in video games, over at Escapist. Good food for thought.

Are you like me? Do you fangirl over Marlee Matlin? You should follow her Twitter because she's awesome. (You should know that she's awesome by now.)(I'm not endorsing Twitter, but then again I kind've suck at it.)

The first 600 words

When I get an idea, the old way of keeping it was to jot it down on a steno pad, but after a day or two I'd look back at it and go, what the hell was that supposed to be about? Nowadays I'll sit down with a new idea and hammer some of it out on the keyboard, then use that first scene as a proverbial red string around my finger to remind myself later what I came up with.

This brainstorming sit-down usually averages out to about six hundred words of rough prose. Beyond that I'm stepping on thin ice without having mapped the rest of it out, so I set it aside. The trick is coming back to it later and, in the light of day, deciding if it's an idea worth sticking with.

Currently on deck is a story about butlers. It's turning into what would happen if Fight Club and Mrs. Brown had been the same movie, and is what happens when I listen to nothing but fiddle reels on my morning commute.

Updatery of a random sort

I don't care what other people say, there's still room for decent zombie stories out there.

**

Batman has a new costume design once again, now that's he's back from romping around with Professor Peabody or whatever happened while he was lost in time (I really don't like the time traveling stories [paradox!]). As to the costume, I like it. It's got those little seam threads that give it the look of actual fabric. Little touches like that are what I also like about Stephanie Brown's Batgirl costume.

As if thirty-seven simultaneous Batman titles weren't enough, Grant Morrison is spearheading a new one called Batman Inc. in which Batman franchises himself. It just... really seems like this is jumping the shark, to me.

Following up on an old post for anyone who was interested, it looks like Iranian filmmaker Kiana Firouz was eventually granted asylum in the UK. Awesome.

One of our P90-X discs is completely jacked. The first one, the one you kickstart with, to which I have now cycled back around. It might have something to do with the fact that the disc set comes in a lacquered cardboard sleeve with beveled edges designed for scratching the discs as you put them back in.

I was watching The Big Lebowski last weekend. I got distracted by chores and phone calls and eventually gave up on it, but I didn't realize until yesterday that I missed my favorite scene where Walter freaks out on that kid. Well, it's a tie between that one and the nihilists with the ferret.

That's all I've got. Life is otherwise routine.

Do you see what happens, Larry?

The other blog

For the sake of posterity, I have another blog also, which has been around much longer than this one:

http://hildebabble.livejournal.com/

I haven't decided yet whether to keep them slightly different or have them mirror each other.  Time will tell, eh?  Definitely plan on keeping both of them.

The goal is to get the website revamped and possibly reroute all bloggerly stuff through Wordpress.  But I could just be repeating words I've heard, as I really have no clue how to be a productive Netizen, and I'm still a novice learning about creating and running a website.  I'm trying to learn, I promise.

It's not true, is it, that thing about peanut butter and banana sandwiches being what killed Elvis?  Because I had one for lunch and, not gonna lie, it was delicious.

First Post

I have a Blogspot now.  Cool.
